Break up your unploughed ground

Break up your unploughed ground

Hosea 10:12

  1. Break up your unploughed ground – Unploughed ground is either fallow ground that has been left for a year to recover or wasteland that has not been cultivated. Our lives can be like wasteland. God calls us to the hard work of ploughing up our lives and to planting new crops of righteousness. There are wasteland areas of our lives that are unhelpful and unfruitful. God says plough it up, burn the rubbish and get rid of the weeds. We need to deal systemically with the sin in our lives. God is telling us to repent of the sinful areas in our lives. Is God highlighting an area of your life that needs ploughing up? God promises a great harvest if we plough up the wasteland in our lives. There is a danger in minimal cultivation, only breaking up the surface. A hard layer develops and roots cannot penetrative the soil. Do not only deal with things on the surface of your life and allow a hardness to developed. God wants to deal with the deep things in our lives. God calls us to go deep with Him.
  2. It is time to seek the Lord – It is hard to turn away from sin unless we replace our focus. The only way to overcome powerful temptations is to focus on something positive. It is time to seek the Lord. Our focus needs to be on the cross and what Jesus has done for us. Now is the time to seek the Lord. Today is the day of salvation. The people Hosea was speaking to did not know how little time they had left to seek the Lord. Life is short and Jesus could return at any moment. It is time to seek the Lord now.
  3. Until He comes and showers His righteousness on you – God calls us to keep on seeking Him. God promises if we seek Him He will come and shower His righteousness upon us. We can sow righteous seed, but we need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit to bring the seed to life. God promises His righteousness and not our own righteousness upon us. God’s righteousness leads to fullness of life.
