Here and now
2 Peter 1:3-11
What about the here and now? We can talk about tomorrow, but tomorrow is not guaranteed. Zacchaeus recognised that he needed to act ‘here and now’ (Luke 19:8).
Pastor Paul emphasised four Ps from 2 Peter 1:3-11 :-
- Promise (vs 3-4) – God has given us everything we need to live in this life through our knowledge of Jesus. We see and hear of everything going on in the world, but this is a knowledge of worldly things, this is not a knowledge of God. There are so many evil desires in the world. We need to focus on the promises of God.
- Practice (vs 5-7) – We are called to add to our faith. It is not a one time thing. We need to work out our faith. If we have faith in God and we need to add to it – goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love. What do we taste like to the world? Is there something of God missing from us?
- Possess (vs 8-9) – We need to possess these qualities in increasing measure. We need to keep practicing these things. God helps us and teaches us how to increase in these things. We need to get to know more and more of Jesus in order to be productive in life.
- Position (vs 10-11) – Martin Luther nailed what he stood for to the door of the church. He stood on what he believed. What are the foundations of what you build your life upon? We have to stand up for the truth (2 Peter 1:9). Do not forget what Jesus has done for you. We need to be eager to stand in what God has called us to. The world has to move, not us!!
