King Jesus is present
Romans 13:8-14; Colossians 2:13-14
Debt and justice are linked in Scripture. Debt is serious and affects every aspect of people’s lives.
There are three types of debt:
- The debt of finances – Many people live up to their financial limits until circumstances change.
- The debt to love each other – Love is the key to communities and fulfilling the law.
- The debt of sin – Sin is a transgression against God. Jesus is the only answer for this debt.
Sam Wells, vicar of St Martin’s in the Field, in his lecture “What is wrong with poverty” has argued that the addressing of poverty is not at best to be understood as being about overcoming someone else’s limitations but about overcoming isolation and about communion. He urges the church not to think of itself as being for the people, but about being with them, just as God is not only on our side but came to be with us, Immanuel, the incarnation of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
